Pallet Patterns and Stretch-Wrap Checks for Flour Sacks

Flour sacks arranged on a warehouse pallet and unitised with stretch film

A consistent pallet pattern can help reduce product loss and handling difficulty for flour sacks, depending on the sack construction, pallet and operating conditions. Stretch wrap may contribute to load unitisation, but it cannot correct a weak seam or unsuitable pallet on its own.

Review sack and pallet compatibility

Record filled sack weight, dimensions, seam line and outer surface. The pallet should support the sack footprint; overhanging corners or damaged boards can contribute to layer movement or sack tears.

Compare options such as consistent seam orientation or interlocked layers in a small trial. Observe spillage, sack slip and compression of lower layers under a representative shipping scenario.

Adjust stretch wrapping on the actual load

Check how the wrap holds lower and upper layers, how much film is anchored to the pallet and whether corners tear. Set tension and turns with the equipment; excessive wrapping may deform sacks or alter their shape.

Stretch film that does not cover the top is not a rain or warehouse-moisture cover. If additional outer protection is needed, assess a PE pallet hood as a separate layer and check moisture build-up and label visibility beneath it.

Record warehouse and transport observations

Inspect the pallet in short-term storage, during forklift movement and after loading. Record layer shift, seam opening, overhang and wrap tears on one checklist; identify the cause before simply adding more wrap.

Match product lot, packaging lot and pallet label. If the receiving warehouse stacks differently, plan a trial against its receiving conditions and segment results by season, route or sack supplier.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can stretch wrap replace sack seam integrity?

No. Sack-seam integrity is a packaging control; stretch wrap is used for pallet-level unitisation.

Can a pallet hood be used with stretch wrap?

They can be considered together when their roles differ; validate the hood, wrap and ventilation effects on a real load.
