Palletising Wind Turbine Gearbox Spare Parts

Wind turbine gearbox spare part blocked on a pallet for dispatch

Wind turbine gearbox parts can be large, heavy and high value. Shipping design must consider surface and corrosion protection as well as centre of gravity, pallet deck and lifting equipment. Do not restrain a component directly to a pallet before confirming the maker’s lifting points and storage instructions.

Protect surfaces and sensitive features

Protect machined surfaces, shaft ends, connection bores and coupling areas according to the technical instructions for the part. Corrosion-preventive packaging, lubrication or moisture barriers depend on the component and storage duration; do not use arbitrary films or adhesive materials.

Support the spare on blocking or a purpose-designed cradle that distributes contact. It must not rock on the pallet or shift during lifting. Select an outer cover or crate that carries the load and prevents impact from transferring directly to the component.

Verify centre of gravity and load restraint

Check pallet capacity, deck width, fork clearance and centre of gravity with suitable handling equipment. If the geometry does not fit a standard pallet, a custom skid or engineered crate may be needed. Use banding, tie-down and blocking points only where the product or pack allows.

Stretch film may help organise the outer pallet unit; it should not be treated as sufficient vehicle restraint for a heavy machinery part. Plan tie-down, blocking and route conditions with the carrier. OSHA resources address US workplace safety; verify applicable Turkish regulations and carrier procedures separately.

Maintain traceability in the shipment file

Record part number, lifting instructions, gross weight, pack type and pallet photographs before dispatch. The operator should verify lifting-equipment capacity and sling/restraint arrangement against the shipment plan.

At unloading and delivery, document shift, tilt, crate damage, moisture ingress and surface condition. For long storage or international routes, review corrosion protection and crate design with the manufacturer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can stretch wrap secure a heavy gearbox part to a pallet?

It may support the outer unit load; it does not replace designed blocking and load restraint for the part and vehicle.

Which film should be used for corrosion protection?

Selection depends on material, finish, storage duration and maker requirements; do not apply directly without technical approval.
