Masking tape is a pressure-sensitive tape used to separate areas during an operation or provide temporary holding. Paper backing and adhesive construction vary; no tape behaves identically on every surface.
Selection criteria
Consider surface material and condition, application time, temperature, sunlight and paint together. Check the product-specific data sheet for application and removal conditions; do not assume every tape is suitable for elevated temperatures.
Test first
Apply the tape on a small inconspicuous area and test painting and removal. The surface should be sound and clean. Inspect for residue or lifted paint after the intended dwell time.
