Why Does Paint Bleed Under Masking Tape?

Paint bleed may result from surface texture, incomplete edge contact, contamination or painting conditions. Observe each application step separately to identify the cause.

Inspect the edge and surface

On textured surfaces, full contact across peaks and valleys can be difficult. Check surface integrity and cleanliness, press the appropriate tape edge evenly and compare results on a small sample.

Painting and removal

Excess paint or build-up at the edge can affect results. Follow paint manufacturer guidance, record tape width, dwell time and removal timing, and change one variable at a time. Always trial delicate surfaces first.
