Shipping a Laboratory Centrifuge: Rotor and Equipment Checks

Laboratory centrifuge packed in a protective carton with a separate rotor compartment

Laboratory centrifuges contain sensitive mechanical and electronic parts. Whether a rotor stays in the instrument, how the lid is secured and which orientation is allowed depend on the model. Use the manufacturer’s operating and transport manual rather than a generic packing recipe.

Verify the model manual and preparation steps

Before dispatch, empty the instrument and complete cleaning or decontamination under the laboratory’s procedure. Do not treat equipment containing samples, biological material or chemical residue as an ordinary product shipment. Follow the model-specific manual for removing or locking the rotor and accessories.

Check that the lid and moving parts are secured in the maker’s recommended position. If the manual requires separate rotor transport or a specific restraint, do not substitute another method.

Support the instrument body and rotor accessories separately

Use internal support that carries the body from its base, prevents tipping and limits movement in the carton. Do not transfer the instrument’s weight to its lid, control panel or delicate protrusions. Secure the rotor and adapters in separate, identified positions.

The outer carton should close around the supports without excessive pressure. Seal the base and top flaps with packaging tape and check contact with the board. Heavy instruments may require palletised transport and suitable lifting points depending on the carrier.

Keep a record for receipt and installation

Add the model, serial number, rotor and adapter list, and pack condition to the dispatch record. Follow manufacturer and carrier requirements for any fragile or orientation marks on the carton.

At receipt, inspect for moisture, crushing, tip marks and open tape; photograph any findings. Give the installation team the manufacturer’s pre-start checks to complete before returning the unit to service.
