Why surface preparation matters
Dust, loose fibres and dirt can reduce contact between tape and cardboard. A wet surface or condensation can also interfere with application. Assess the carton together with the tape manufacturer's instructions.
Inspect cartons before application
Keep cartons in a clean, dry area. Remove dust using a dry method that does not damage the board. Separate wet, torn or crushed cartons; tape alone may not correct such damage.
Watch temperature changes
Condensation may form when cold cartons enter a warmer area. Wait until the surface is dry and compare carton temperature with the tape's application range.
Apply according to the tape type
Pressure-sensitive tape requires even contact and pressure as recommended by the manufacturer. With water-activated tape, check the dispenser's water setting; this does not mean leaving the carton surface wet.
What to check in a trial
- Do the ends and edges make even contact?
- Are results consistent across carton batches?
- Are flaps closed after storage and shipping?
- If there is a problem, have surface, tape and equipment been reviewed separately?
