Surface Protection and Internal Restraint for Guitar Shipments

Acoustic guitar prepared for shipment with fitted internal supports

Wrapping the body alone is not enough when shipping a guitar. The neck, bridge, tuners and finish have different contact and movement risks. Follow the instrument maker’s shipping instructions, and test any surface-protection material on a small, inconspicuous area first to confirm compatibility with the finish.

Protect the body and neck at separate contact points

Whether to ship an instrument in a case or with internal supports depends on the product and route. Prevent the neck from floating inside the box without compressing it. Use shaped supports to keep the body from contacting carton walls and the tuners from pressing against the outer pack.

When selecting a sleeve, soft separator or film, consider the finish and storage duration. Adhesive protective tape needs a compatibility and residue test before application to a finished surface; do not apply adhesive to the instrument without maker approval.

Separate accessories and limit movement

Place cables, straps, picks, spare strings and other accessories in closed pouches or small boxes. Use a separate compartment so these items cannot rub against the body or finish. Before closing, gently check movement in multiple directions.

Seal carton seams with suitable carton tape; apply it to the outer-pack joints, never to the instrument itself. If multiple cartons are palletised, assess the pattern, edge supports and outer unit restraint separately.

Prepare a pre- and post-shipment checklist

Record model or serial number, accessory set and visible condition at dispatch. Check the carrier’s rules for musical instruments or fragile goods, size and weight limits, and damage reporting procedures in advance.

At receipt, record punctures, crushing, opening or moisture. Inspect contents after opening the carton in a safe area. Keep photographs, delivery time and carrier information if damage is found; use a test method suited to the distribution channel.
