Palletising Seedling Trays, Airflow and Shipment Covers

Seedling trays prepared on a greenhouse pallet with a ventilated protective cover

Seedling trays are not loads that can be compressed like sacks or cartons. Preventing tray tipping and plant damage in transit must be balanced with the effect of packaging on airflow and post-watering conditions.

Define tray geometry and transit duration

Record tray dimensions, cell density, plant height and units per pallet by product family. Leave headroom so upper layers do not crush foliage; validate stacking separately for empty and loaded trays if both are used.

Route, dwell time and loading method change the conditions seedlings experience. Plan pallet height and access for the receiver’s unloading equipment; avoid outer packaging that places a load on the plants.

Stabilise the pallet without covering the plants

Arrange trays on the pallet or carrier to limit sliding and tipping. If stretch wrap is used, apply it only where needed to unitise the base or pallet; it should not compress foliage or unintentionally block airflow.

If an outer cover is required, check ventilation openings, plant height, moisture and dwell time under real dispatch conditions. Do not assume a fully closed cover is suitable; it should not touch plants or obstruct handling equipment.

Monitor loading and delivery damage

Before loading, check the pallet base, tray interlocks and headroom. Create a trial scenario to confirm the forklift or vehicle does not shake trays, touch foliage or allow the load to move, and link results to the plant variety.

At delivery, record tipped trays, crushed seedlings, broken cells, drying or excess moisture. Review lot and shipment records together to separate packaging issues from watering, dwell time and route conditions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should all seedling trays be wrapped in stretch film?

No. Consider wrapping only for suitable pallet unitisation while preserving plant headroom and airflow.

Can a PE cover fully enclose seedlings?

Do not assume this as a general rule. Validate ventilation, moisture, plant contact and delivery duration under real conditions.
