Cable drums require a considered load arrangement because of their weight and dimensions. Packaging should limit drum movement, protect flanges and keep the cable end identifiable.

This guide provides general packaging information. Validate critical applications with representative trials and supplier instructions.
Protect the drum flanges
Inspect flanges for crushing and edge impact. Keep the drum in the transport orientation specified by its manufacturer and avoid uncontrolled stacking. Secure the cable end and keep the start-end identification visible.
Plan the pallet and restraint
Match drum diameter to the pallet base and confirm no overhang or unstable centre of gravity. Chocks or suitable restraints may reduce rolling. Stretch film can provide supplementary containment, but it does not replace a mechanical restraint where a cylindrical load could roll.
Record before loading
Match cable type, drum number, length and batch to shipping documents. Confirm handling equipment follows the drum maker’s instructions and site safety procedures. At receipt, inspect flanges, cable jacket and restraints.

Frequently asked questions
Can a cable drum travel horizontally?
The suitable orientation depends on drum design and manufacturer instructions. Verify technical guidance instead of assuming a direction.
Is stretch wrap enough to secure a drum?
Do not assume it is sufficient alone. Assess pallet design and mechanical restraint for rolling and sliding risks.
