Corrosion and Component Control for Marine Deck Hardware Kits

Stainless marine fittings organised in compartmented cartons for shipment

Deck-hardware kits may contain stainless fittings, hinges, shackles and small installation parts in many sizes. A product intended for a marine environment should not be assumed immune to corrosion during transit; surface finish, original packaging and shipping duration still matter.

Separate components by size and surface

Place fittings in divided boxes or closed bags so they cannot strike each other. Check the maker’s technical information for parts with different metals, coatings or finishes that should not contact. Sharp edges must not puncture bags or corrugated dividers.

Match the kit contents against part codes and quantities. Small fasteners loose in a carton can scratch surfaces and appear missing at receipt. Keep the contents organised with internal dividers and closed accessory bags.

Manage moisture and the outer pack for the route

For sea freight or humid storage, retain the product’s protective packaging and check that it is dry and intact. Moisture barriers or desiccants must suit the product and route; do not add them indiscriminately inside a sealed pack.

Close the carton with suitable carton tape. If multiple cartons ship on a pallet, stretch film may support the outer unit load. It will not separate loose components inside cartons or replace corrosion protection.

Make labels and receipt checks clear

Place order, kit and handling references legibly on the carton. Use moisture, fragile or stacking marks only as appropriate to maker and carrier requirements; labels do not replace a pack designed for the actual conditions.

Check carton count, kit contents and package integrity at dispatch and delivery. Photograph damaged or wet packaging; if corrosion or surface damage is suspected, follow the supplier’s instructions before installation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do stainless fittings need a moisture barrier?

That depends on finish, original packaging, storage duration and route; confirm with the manufacturer.

Does stretch wrap protect small fittings?

No. Wrap may unitise a pallet; small parts need separate cartons, compartments or closed bags.
