Damage to CNC tooling is not limited to a broken part. Cutting edges can strike one another, precision surfaces can be scratched, or heavy holders can stress the carton base and affect readiness for use. Part geometry, weight and order quantity should determine the packing design.
Separate cutting edges and precision surfaces
Sort end mills, drills and holders by part type. Place each in a separate compartment or maker-supplied guard so cutting edges cannot contact one another. Handle oily or coated parts according to the product procedure.
A compartmented tray or cushioning support may suit smaller items; it should prevent movement without pressing on the cutting edge. Record piece counts and part codes on the packing sheet.
Match the outer pack to the total weight
Compare the weight of heavy holders and metal components with carton capacity. If the total load is high, split the parts across cartons according to order or lifting requirements. Seal the carton top and bottom with suitable tape and inspect the base seam.
For multi-carton pallets, place heavier cartons lower and group similar sizes. Avoid overhang and unstable layers. Stretch wrap and corner boards may help unitise the pallet, but do not replace a suitable pallet and internal carton selected for the load.
Add a checklist for a ready-to-use receipt
Keep the part code, quantity, order or work-order number and any lot details readable. Check that guards over cutting edges are closed and complete before dispatch.
At receipt, record crushed bases, open seams, moisture and movement in the inner tray. A sample pack trial can also measure opening time: a good pack protects parts and gives the machinist quick access to the correct tool.

Frequently asked questions
Can cutting tools share one compartment?
Only if fitted positions prevent cutting edges from striking each other or the holder.
Can heavy tool holders ship in cartons?
Verify carton capacity and weight distribution; palletised freight may be more suitable.
Does stretch wrap eliminate pallet shift?
No. The pallet, layer pattern and wrap application must be validated together.
