Shipping a glass aquarium requires protection for visible panels as well as joints and corners. Packaging is not simply wrapping the tank in stretch film: the maker’s handling instructions, orientation, edge support, internal clearance and outer load restraint must be planned together. One pack pattern cannot be assumed to suit every tank size or design.
Set orientation from the maker’s instructions
Follow the manufacturer’s guide for lifting, draining, upright or flat transport and storage. Tank construction, glass thickness and joint design vary, so do not assume a universal shipping orientation. Fragile labels encourage care but do not replace a handling procedure.
Prevent glass panels from contacting each other or hard parts. Support the tank in a correctly sized carton, frame or crate; check on a sample pack that load is not concentrated at one point on the corners. Ship accessories in a separate compartment.
Protect corners and the outer pallet load together
Choose corrugated edge protectors, dividers or a purpose-designed frame for the tank geometry. Supports should limit movement without creating excessive point pressure on the glass. Confirm with a handling trial that the tank cannot slide and strike the package interior.
For pallet transport, stretch film may help unitise the outer pallet load; it does not absorb impact for the glass or replace internal protection. Wrap tension must not compress the carton or tank. If rain protection is needed, prevent water from pooling in the pack.
Record any damage at receipt
Photograph the tank condition, carton orientation and package count before dispatch. Tell the carrier clearly about tip and top-load restrictions; plan in-vehicle restraint under the carrier’s procedure.
At delivery, record crushed, torn, tipped or wet packaging. If a crack or leak is suspected, do not use the product before following the maker’s and carrier’s inspection instructions. ISTA shipping-test frameworks can help evaluate package performance against actual distribution risks.

Frequently asked questions
Can stretch wrap protect an aquarium on a pallet?
It may help unitise the outside pallet load; the glass and corners still require suitable internal supports or a protective crate.
Should the tank travel upright or flat?
Follow the current instructions for that specific tank model rather than assuming a universal orientation.
